Rockland County, NY is a bedroom community for New York City. Its geographic size is small in relation to the other Counties of New York State. Because of its picturesque topography of hills and vegetation, the movement of vehicles through the various communities is somewhat difficult. Further, during the start and conclusion of a work day, the traffic peaks beyond the capacity of certain roads
The school districts located within this County are part of the Rockland Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). This BOCES has responsibility for providing transportation to and from educational classes for grades K through 12 for Special Education Students (Children with Special Needs) and private school children. These children have to be transported across the various School District boundaries to the BOCES educational facilities or private schools.
Challenge
The BOCES retained VMC to create Bus Routes that would allow better utilization of buses by constructing efficient bus routes among the school districts with the destination being the BOCES education facility or other school locations.
Results
VMC utilized its organizational communication skills to obtain cooperation among the school districts, prepared policies (transportation parameters) so that transportation practices across school district boundaries were consistent and performed computerized routing techniques in developing efficient transportation routes. Costs for transportation was projected to reduce costs by approximately 25%.
